A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine that is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the operator to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These type of machines are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Most often they are used for moving pallets and doing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly near the ground. The operator could direct the machinery to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines can be raised to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials required, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, several companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be utilized to finish these specific tasks at several companies instead.
