Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is provided by big industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures must be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging place. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an injured worker should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit items like lighters or matches to be used while somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
