Columbus, Georgia is located in the states Muscogee County, where it serves as the county seat. It is the principal city of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area and is directly across the river from the city of Phenix, Alabama. It is the 4th biggest metropolitan area and 3rd largest city in Georgia State.

Atlanta lies 160 km to the north of Columbus. South of the city is Fort Benning within Chattahoochee County. Columbus was name the 4th best city to reside within the US by Best Life Magazine. There are a lot of museums and interesting sites for visitors. The city of Columbus is accessed by air at the Columbus Airport.

After a site was selected in the year 1828, Columbus was established on the navigable portion of the Chattahoochee River. It was located on the Georgia border heading into Alabama. The site was home to Creek Indians before they were removed during the year 1836. The city of Columbus was named after the explorer Christopher Columbus. Dr. Edwin L. DeGraffenried drew up the plan for the city and located it on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. Cotton production was the region's major industry.

The city of Columbus was connected to the international cotton market through the Chattahoochee. Textile mills were established to help build up the agricultural sector with industrial production, just after the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th Century. Columbus's commercial significance increased throughout the rest of the century. By the year 1860, it was considered an essential industrial center, known as "the Lowell of the South," in reference to a northern industrial township in the state of Massachusetts.

The city of Columbus is currently home to a range of prominent industries, expanding their economy past the production of textiles. The companies Aflac, TSYS, Synovus and Carmike Cinemas have their headquarters here. Columbus College grew from a two-year institution into the reputable Columbus State University. During 1971, the city became the first city within Georgia State to consolidate county and city governments.
